How We Work

Education

Everyone has the power to take action to provide safe passage for migratory and resident birds. It can be as simple as flipping a switch.

The Bird-Safe Baltimore network includes community organizations, agencies, and institutions that work alongside residents and businesses to reduce the hazards of the built environment, in addition to providing vital bird-friendly habitat and beautifying communities.

Find us providing educational materials and resources at various events throughout the city. You can help spread the word by talking with your neighbors about why you’ve taken the pledge to reduce nonessential outdoor lighting during migration and addressed glass reflectivity at your home, school, business, faith-based institution, or elsewhere in your community.

Legislation

The Bird-Safe Baltimore network advocates for legislation promoting bird-safe, sustainable design. Our first big win came in 2023 with the passing of the Maryland Sustainable Buildings Act. We will continue to leverage the power of the Bird-Safe Baltimore Network to work with elected officials and constituents to make Baltimore a safe, healthy place for birds and people.

Mitigation

Taking action to ensure safe passage for birds means mitigating the effects of reflective and transparent glass surfaces by making glass visible to birds. These mitigation efforts range from small, low-cost window treatments you can do at home to larger-scale installations. Check out some spotlighted Mitigation Projects and think about how you can take action to prevent window collisions at home, school, work, and in your community. Get in touch to collaborate on a mitigation installation.

Take the pledge to ensure safe passage for birds.
